About Kara Birch, DNP, PMHNP-BC, FNP-BC
Dr. Birch is a dual board-certified Family and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specializing in perinatal and reproductive mental health, digital behavioral health innovation, and integrated healthcare models. With more than a decade of post-doctoral experience at the intersection of clinical care, systems leadership, education, and technology, she has led transformative initiatives that expand access to high-quality, evidence-based mental health care.
Designing Smarter, More Equitable Systems for Mental Health Care
She currently serves as a clinical advisor to digital health startups and healthcare organizations, guiding the design and implementation of safe, scalable, and clinically rigorous care delivery systems. Her expertise lies in translating complex clinical needs into actionable protocols, quality frameworks, and product design strategies that balance innovation with clinical integrity and equity.
She has led multiple behavioral health integration initiatives across academic medical centers, digital health platforms, and community systems, improving access to equitable, high-quality mental health care for women and families. She is an active UCSF faculty member, previously serving as Vice Chair for Community Health Systems and leading California’s first multi-campus Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program, expanding the state’s psychiatric workforce across four UC campuses.
Having completed MIT’s AI in Healthcare certificate, Dr. Birch applies expertise in health informatics and AI-assisted quality systems to advance equitable, data-driven models of care.
Where Clinical Expertise Meets Compassionate Care
Dr. Birch continues to provide direct patient care in an integrated women’s behavioral health practice, grounding her work in authentic clinical practice and patient’s needs. She believes everyone should have access to culturally humble, patient centered, and evidence-based care. In addition to training in several therapy modalities she has undergone additional peri-natal specific training from Massachusetts General Hospital and Postpartum Support International to serve patients with compassion and expertise.
